Abstract

Health literacy is the ability to obtain, read, understand and use health care information to make appropriate health decisions and follow instructions for treatment. Health literacy thus encompasses skills both required for clinicians to practice evidence based medicine, as for researchers and policy makers to design sound research and establish proper guidelines and recommendations. This handbook is a practical manual and instruction for asking case relevant questions, searching for relevant literature, critically reflecting on research, drawing conclusions, communicating the evidence, reporting formally and implementing the evidence. The book provides information and tips, along with interactive media on the online learning platform Sofia. The authors clarify basic principles of research methodology and elaborate on different study designs. They provide tips and tricks for searching scientific databases PubMed and Web of Science. They explain the risk of bias assessment and levels of evidence to draw conclusions for both clinical application (critical appraised topics) and scientific reports (systematic reviews). They also describe tools for reference management. Thus the book is ideally suited for students, clinicians, researchers and lecturers active in health care.

Chapters written by authors at various points in their careers detailing what skills they have develope

Abstract

Assessing impact is increasingly critical to the survival of services: managers now require comprehensive information about effectiveness, especially in relation to users. Outlining a rigorously tested approach to library evaluation and offering practical tools and highly relevant examples, this book enables LIS managers to get to grips with the slippery concept of service impact and to address their own impact questions in their planning. The 2nd edition is fully updated to include international approaches to qualitative library evaluation, new international research, and current debates on the evolving nature of evaluation, as well as reflections on the importance of involving stakeholders and of evaluation to guide advocacy. This is an essential tool for practising library and information service managers and policy makers in the field. It will be equally relevant to LIS policy shapers and managers in public, education (schools, further and higher education), health and special libraries and information services working in any country or internationally. It will also be of interest to people engaged in professional education in the field as lecturers or students.

Abstract

From Alan Bennett's Baffled at a Bookcase, to Lucy Mangan's Library Rules, famous writers tell us all about how libraries are used and why they're important. Tom Holland writes about libraries in the ancient world, while Seth Godin describes what a library will look like in the future. Lionel Shriver thinks books are the best investment, Hardeep Singh Kohli makes a confession and Julie Myerson remembers how her career began beside the shelves. Using memoir, history, polemic and some short stories too, The Library Book celebrates 'that place where they lend you books for free' and the people wh
